Staci, You nailed it. Wish I would have known about that seminar, so I too could have been a positive voice for agriculture along with you. I'm finding that using words that are relevant to everyday life and meaningful to the target audience are critical to getting your message communicated. Good job!

I find this to be a timely and interesting article. The survival of the Extension service nationwide seems to be an issue due to budget constraints and the present state of the economy. With less money to work with, state governments are forced to prioritize spending, and those entities that seem to be irrelevant could possibly be eliminated. As an Extension professional in Mississippi, I too am concerned with the future of the organization operating in it current mode. I think that if we are to survive, change is absolutely necessary.

No surprise, Jennifer has nailed it. To influence public policies and shape consumer perceptions, we in Florida agriculture must reach beyond our traditional comfort zones. We must coopt the verbiage, tap into the emotions and re-position our brands so our elected officials and consumers will embrace what we're lobbying and selling. I'm very pleased we're employing the professional talents of the PIE Center to help our industry re-learn how to spell P-R.

I can hear Jonathan Bardzik saying "ANLA has a 100 year history, and every decade there is a discussion of industry promotion, but every decade it fails. Why are will still having the same discussion decade after decade?"

Jennifer, I think you and your peers are on to something with your 'Florida Garden Select' (FGS) program for consumers. I think it has potential if you utilize the media of the coming decade (not yesteryear's media channels). By doing so will break out of the rut that Jonathan speaks of.

I would also encourage you to not try to ride a single horse to success. There are other groundswell initiatives out there that FGS should piggyback on - and vica versa.

Let's talk.

Steve

The article is interesting and sparks my interest in the USGBC & LEED.
I hope one day we can expand the education in agriculture we have to other countries!

Meredith,
As another former journalist (21 years at the Orlando Sentinel), I couldn't agree more. Many in agriculture don't feel comfortable dealing with the media for a whole host of legitimate reasons. But a mutually beneficial relationship can exist. The key word is relationship. It's very tough to build those with reporters in this media landscape, but the effort should be made. I'd much rather take a call from a reporter when there's bad news if I've already dealt with him or her on previous stories. Thanks for your insights.
